Reflections On Evangelism

After a long week of meeting new international students on campus, there are several simple lessons that I think are worth sharing:

1. The Great Commandment is the method by which the Great Commission is accomplished.

If Christ followers would just love God and love people like Jesus, the Great Commission would be the most successful endeavor in human history.

2. Be real.

Referring back to the first point, love people because they are who they are. People can smell it when someone is disingenuous. Be genuinely interested in people, you cannot fake it.

3. Listen.

Referring back to the second point, love people by actively listening to what they say. Stop repeating the same question because you are so focused on what to say next that you failed to listen to what they are saying now.

4. Make friends.

Referring back to the third point, learn to make friends by caring about what they say and who they are. Friends care for and accept care, give advice and receive advice, serve and get served, offer help and receive help. As believers, do not be afraid to receive, no real friendship is a one-way street.

5. It takes time.

Referring back to the fourth point, real friendships take time, there are no shortcuts. Real friendships build trust; and in trust, the Gospel can work miracles.

Love God, Love People
